During the late stages of the game the Battleship will be the primary alien craft responsible for infiltration, subversion, attack missions, and will act later as an escort for Motherships.
Capture of a downed Battleship is of paramount important since it is a required research precondition for research of X-COM's ultimate craft, the Annihilator.
