This page lists the various nuts and bolts of how the game decides which Alien Craft come out of the Dimension Gates and what they do once in Mega-Primus.

Each incursion fleet will consist of 1-7 craft, each with a specific composition and role than can be consulted on the tables below. Each force will consist of UFOs with a primary mission which can be Infiltration, Subversion, Attack and Overspawn Drop. Usually there will also be additional craft flying as escorts and in a few cases an Infiltration or Overspawn Drop force will also have craft assigned to Attack hostile buildings.
Unlike in UFO: Enemy Unknown and X-Com: Terror From the Deep, the Aliens in X-COM: Apocalypse do not have infinite reserves of craft. Rather, the pool of craft in the Alien Dimension is tracked, with new UFOs being constructed every Monday (up to a limit) and X-COM interceptions removing craft from the pool.

The composition of the fleets depends on the UFOs available at the Alien Dimension. Thus, certain fleets will only appear after a certain date. The fleets are sorted in order of priority; for a given mission, the aliens will always use the highest-numbered fleet (furthest down on the list) that they can.
Every time an alien mission is scheduled, the game rolls randomly on a table to decide what act they will attempt to perform. This table changes every week. Then, once an act has been selected, the specific UFO makeup of the incursion is chosen deterministically from tables for each possible act depending on what craft are available in the Alien Dimension pool; as reproduced here, the tables increase in priority downward, so the aliens will always use the highest-numbered fleet possible for the chosen mission.

The game seems to choose the mission randomly from a list of 10 missions that at game start will consist of only Infiltration ones. As the weeks go this list is changed and other missions are added to that list, although the probability of them occuring will initially be 1 in 10.
Some UFOs on the Infiltration and Overspawn Drop tables are listed as "Bombing" craft. These craft will bomb a building, as though on an Air Raid mission.

The Apocalypse Mission has no fixed UFO makeup and is not found on the mission likelihood tables; it is triggered when X-COM destroys the Control Chamber and is an Attack mission with all remaining UFOs.
There is one special UFO incursion, generally called the Apocalypse Mission. This is triggered when X-COM destroys the Control Chamber, and is an Air Raid mission consisting of all remaining alien craft except Probes. As such, it is not found on the mission-choice table and has no fixed UFO makeup.

Revision as of 10:32, 12 July 2020

This page lists the various nuts and bolts of how the game decides which Alien Craft come out of the Dimension Gates and what they do once in Mega-Primus.

Some UFOs on the Infiltration and Overspawn Drop tables are listed as "Bombing" craft. These craft will bomb a building, as though on an Air Raid mission.

*These fleets will never appear, as the ships required will also fulfil a higher-priority fleet.

**This fleet can appear as long as the aliens have at least one Battleship and one Escort Ship (though two Battleships will still appear in Mega-Primus). This is the result of a bug in the spawn routine; instead of checking whether there are two Battleships, it checks whether there is one Battleship twice.
