There is a large range of firearms that will eventually be available to your pirates, but initially you will be stuck with rudimentary guns until you salvage more advanced types from enemies, as well as manufacturing your own through research. Although ranged weapons do not scale like melee weapons do, different types of ammunition can be researched, unlocking new cartridges for certain firearms. If you are behind in weapon research or haven't encountered all the factions, this mechanic is useful in staying toe-to-toe with enemies. In addition, it allows your hands to carry alternate types of ammo in preparation for enemy resistances and vulnerabilities.
Ranged weapons are best categorized by their statistics, rather than just their type of damage like vanilla X-Com (Ballistics, Laser, Plasma). They are as follows:
Artillery is your fire support option; most are very long distance, deal very high damage, and have huge blast radii. Ammunition is extremely limited, and takes forever to fire and reload.
Bows have limited range and low initial damage, but they have unlimited ammunition and damage scales very well with experienced hands.
Flamers typically have short range and minimal damage, but the damage quickly stacks and can cause damage over time, as well as destroying the morale of the enemy quickly.
Handguns are your standard sidearm with limited damage and range with moderate accuracy. The upsides are they are generally light, small enough to fit in quick draw or belt, and are one-handed (thus not suffering any accuracy penalty).
Heavy Weapons are between Machine Guns and Artillery; moderate accuracy and high damage, at the expense of heavy weight, very limited ammo, and smaller blast radii.
Machine Guns generally have low accuracy, moderate damage with moderate weight and increased ammo to compensate for the burst firing.
Rifles are the bread and butter firearm; the jack of all trades, master of none.
Shotguns are best saved for short range, and fire in a spread. Damage listed is for each "pellet" that hits a target, so as expected, damage can escalate quickly.
SMGs are a strange hybrid, allowing burst fire at the cost of lowered damage. They are lighter than Machine Guns, compact as handguns, at the expense of accuracy.
Sniper Rifles have similar range to Artillery, and very high damage but suffer huge accuracy penalties against close range targets. They fire and reload slowly, as well.
Supernatural weapons regularly rely on VooDoo to use or increase damage, as well as having various effects.
Miscellaneous weapons are the ones that don't really fall into any other category. The magnitude of usefulness is highly dependent on the combat situation.
