Explosions

When equipped with Personal Disruptor Shields, you can see the shield animation even if you are several tiles away from the explosion. Is that just phantom damage to represent a sort of shockwave or does the explosion still deal damage outside its usual radius, just so small that it could barely damage or kill a unit?
