In General
Soldiers and MECs mainly gain experience (XP) through completing missions. However, various other sources of experience are possible.
Experience allows soldiers to promote to increased ranks which will increase the number of perks they have and their base stats.
Note: SHIVs do not gain XP.

A High Level Alien bonus will apply if a Private, Lance Corporal, or Corporal sees one of the following enemies during a mission: Outsider, Mechtoid, Sectoid Commander, Muton Elite, Sectopod, or Ethereal.
The following types of missions count as a Hard Mission: Landed UFOs, Terror Missions, Alien Base Assaults, and XCOM Base Defenses.
