I Play UFO Defense through DOSBox 0.72, installed from CD on loan since 2006 (so I'd guess v1.4), and as of 2008 loaded on a flash drive. Due to OCD-like tendencies, and more due to a lack of consistent play, I haven't gone half-way through a play-through on Beginner.

For a similar DOS game, which is similar to X-COM in awesomeness, I would recommend Syndicate (which he also owns a physical copy of) by Bullfrog Productions Ltd.
