Heavy Weapons Platforms are an essential part of an X-COM squad.
At the very beginning of the First Alien War, the only Heavy Weapons Platforms available to X-COM were standard Earth technologies. However, during the war, as our R&D chaps unveiled new Alien technology our HWPs became much more useful.
