This is an immensely devastating version of the standard Disruptor Gun. Again it is based on the same inter-dimensional technology that seems to power the Dimension Gates. It is possible that these weapons are actually drawing power from some remote source connected by an inter-dimensional field. This amazing technology seems to be incongruous with the Aliens' organic weaponry and may originate from some other Alien intelligence.  From: Apocalypse Ufopaedia

The alien's proper handheld offensive weapon. Everything that really matters is improved compared to the Disruptor Gun. A large and heavy beam weapon doing more damage at longer range with better accuracy. Fire rate is slightly slower but is offset by larger energy (ammunition) stores. A dual wielded setup may be preferrable for increased fire rate at the expense of lower accuracy. A strong and accurate X-Com agent is best.
This weapon will become the mainstay of Anthropods and Skeletoids. Weapon shortages may not be a problem if explosive use on the battlescape is minimal hence, manufacture of these is exotic items will not be necessary.

-The devastator cannon is another step up the alien technology tree, packing even more firepower than the [Disrupter gun], while possessing greater range and accuracy.  Used in one hand in aimed mode it is very deadly at long ranges, capable of killing unshielded foes in 2 or 3 hits, and shielded foes in 5 or 6.  The other way to use Devastator cannons is to give a soldier two, on either full auto or snap shot firing modes, and having the soldier lay down covering fire, suppressive fire, or destroying terrain.  In close combat this weapon is unrivaled in close combat, cutting through any alien in seconds.  However, it is capable of cutting down unshielded soldiers in 2 or 3 hits, and very often critically wounding a soldier in only one hit.  Its great accuracy makes this weapon exceptionally dangerous, especially when coupled with cloaking devices, as the aliens often do, and pouring fire onto an enemy who can't see you.  Aliens with this gun should be your first priority targets until the missiles start appearing.
