I'm thinking here the reasoning is that with a larger UFO, assuming a standard interception with the AI moving your ships right up next to the UFO, the missiles would not have enough time to split before they strike. In that case only the main missile damage is done. There may be an optimum range that is required for you to get the best out of this launcher.
