Cover is your first line of defense. You should always go into cover when possible.
There are two types of cover: Half, and Full.
Half-cover is represented by a half-shield by your soldier's name. It provides 20 defense, meaning the chance that baddies will hit you from the direction of the cover is 20 less than normal.
Full cover is a full shield, and gives 40 defense, over the 20 given by half cover.
If you don't feel safe in regular cover, you can Hunker Down to increase your defense.
