I just remembered something about unresearched artefacts that could probably be mentioned, either to avoid or to be used as a unofficial 'cheat'. 

Unresearched artefacts aren't handled properly and you could end up getting the 65536 (aka -1) widget bug. 

I don't remember how it works with inventory items, but with vehicle items, it involves transferring common alien artefacts (i.e. small shields) through the Aircraft menu, and then trasferring the item again through the road vehicle menu. By sending more than you actually own, your base ends up with -1 (or how many items you went over). Item storage is stored in a 16-bit unsigned short integer. That's an integer value between 0 and 65536. Because it doesn't have -1, it wraps to 65536.
