Airborne tips
*The higher an airbrone unit flies the larger its fire zone (see Firing) will become, becoming much larger than any unit on a lower level. However, this also makes any unit taking advantage of this much easier to be seen by the enemy.
*An airborne unit firing explosive rounds at target a on a lower level than itself is much more likely to strike the ground nearby its target on a miss than a unit firing on the same level as its target. The benefit of nearly every explosive round shot from above doing at least some damage to its target makes explosive rounds a popular choice for airborne units.

The mission planer allows you to configure and place your units, as well as choosing the mission type and parameters.

Choosing the map
Initially the map type is set to the same type used in the previous game the challenger played. By clicking on the map name, a new menu will appear with these options to alter the map:
Choosing the game rules
There are several rules to choose from to alter the way each game is played. By clicking on the Game Rules text, a new menu will appear with these options to alter them:

Configuring units
To configure your units, which is best done by starting a hotseat game to popup the mission planer, hit F4 or ctrl-click the unit you are configuring. This pops up the configuration dialog. Besides configuring a unit, from here one may save or load teams, as well as select the weaponset.
A unit may be equipped with a weapon by left-clicking the weapon, then dragging the weapon onto the slot and left-clicking again. Right-click drops the weapon to the ground. Some weapons need to loaded with ammo the same way by right-clicking with the ammo on the weapon. A loaded weapon will show the number of rounds loaded below the weapon icon.
If you hit F4 or ctrl-click the unit image, the unit stat configuration dialog pops up.
The dialog is closed by hitting ESC.

Configuring unit stats
Left click on the picture of the current soldier you are viewing to configure their stats. This dialog allows you to assign point to stats. If you have no points, reduce a stat to get points to spend. You may choose the race and armor of the unit. It is currently not possible to set the race to alien directly if the unit is female, so set it to male default first.
This dialog is closed by hitting ESC.

Placing units
Left-click on the unit you wish to place. Drag the line to the location inside your box(green box left side= challenger, red box right side= taker) and left-click to place the unit. Right-click a unit on the map or a units name to remove it from the map.

Send units and start the game
Hit [Send] to send the team. [Send] will green up if your team is below the point limit and if the units are equipped with weaponry allowed by the weapon set. Units carrying disallowed weaponry will show up red. After that, when both players hit [Start], the game starts and the battlescape will show up.

Base cost (with minimum stats): 395

Unarmored soldiers have the 2nd worst armor of the game, followed only by Sectoids. And, just like the original game it doesn't provide much protection against plasma fire or explosive ammo. But you can still implement the old "send the cheap rookie first" strategy, or the cannon fodder tactic.

Armour levels
* Front-  12
Standard Armor (a.k.a. "blue armor")
Base cost (with minimum stats): 705

Standard armor can be quite useful and is medium priced. It can be difficult to kill the wearer with only one shot, which causes a better survival rate. However, when single handedly facing a power suit it will be at a severe disadvantage. Personal armor can survive long range fire from enemies but it is somewhat vulnerable to quickly suffering critical injuries, which will limit the accuracy of the soldier.

Armour levels
* Front-  50

Power Suit
Base cost (with minimum stats): 1105

The big X-COM armor. Units equipped with this armor are walking tanks due to their ability to take damage. Power suits can't be easily killed in one shot if they have intact armor on all sides. It is common for a soldier in a power suit to take hits on several locations and still stand until a hit strikes it at an already damaged location. It is nessasary to concentrate large amounts of firepower onto one location to kill them.
The power suits are vulnerable at close distances because even their armor isn't enough to protect them from laser/plasma rifles' auto fire at point blank range. Their cost limits their numbers, which can be a disadvantage, in part because power suits can be taken down more easily if they becomes outnumbered by less-armored units.

Armour levels
* Front- 100
Flying Suit
Base cost (with minimum stats): 1355

Flying suits are power suits with the ability to fly and extra armor. The first characteristic can make them able to preform a variety of roles. However, cover is necessary to prevent enemy units to spot them on the air. Otherwise, if they're hovering on the open they are easy targets (the proverbial duck on the water).

Aliens
Sectoid
Sectoids are your standard little green man type alien. They have extremely low armor values, but it is matched by an equally low cost. Sectoids won't stand up in a firefight, but they do serve as good scouts.

Armour levels
* Front-   4

Muton
Base cost (with minimum stats) : 905

Mutons are large, scary aliens who can easily take a bruising and still fight back. They are the perfect addition to a team which requires some muscle or plans to get shot up. Mutons are a good choice if you don't want to spend the points for power or flying armor
but you also want decent armor.

Armour levels
Snakeman
Base cost (with minimum stats) : 605

Snakemen are predatory hunters who have armor that is just below human standard armor. They are good filler in any team because they have a low point value and only marginally sub par armor. Let's face it though, you should throw at least one snakeman onto your team for the pure cool factor that they provide.

Armour levels
* Front-  40

Ethereal
Base cost (with minimum stats) : 955

Ethereals are strange cloaked aliens who have slightly better than standard armor and the ability to fly. This gives them a strong amount of versatility when it comes to the roles they can play.

Armour levels
Floaters are the cheapest flying unit in the game. Unfortunately this means that their armor isn't going to help them much more than humans with no armor. They make excellent scouts due to their mobility, and because explosions do not travel up they are excellent for hovering over the enemy and blowing them up.
Their accuracy can vary from low/medium to high and they make up most of a squad's equipment because of their versatility and their ability to be used at all ranges.

- In general pistols are less expensive than rifles and can be fired more during a turn but their accuracy is worse than rifles.
- Rifles possess auto fire capability but their power is lower than heavy rifles.
- Plasma is the best non-explosive weapon in the game. Unfortunately it is also the most expensive and the ammo load can be limited (although it might not be necessary to bring extra clips if you manage to conserve its ammo).
- Laser is cheaper and has unlimited shots. But it is less powerful and has worse accuracy than plasma weapons.

----

Sniper weapons
----

Area weapons
Area weapons are any firing weapon which discharges a High Explosive/Incendiary/Smoke round. They include cannons, grenade and rocket launchers.

Area weapons should be used for 3 purposes:
# soften up an enemy's armor (by close-by hits)
# destroy its cover (to allow for the general purpose weapons to hit without being stopped)
# create smoke to cover the movement of your units.

It can be difficult to kill an armored enemy by simply using area weapons, depending on the weapons' accuracy and the target's armor.

* Rocket Launcher is very powerful but the rockets are very expensive. And a Large Rocket will usually NOT ensure a kill if the target has undamaged power or fly armor.
* Auto Cannon vs. Heavy Cannon. 1) AC has auto ability, poor accuracy and lower power but it costs less. 2) HC has no auto ability and is more expensive but has better accuracy and power.
* AC is good for firing blindly into an area, without mattering if it scores a direct hit or not. It is also good for close range fighting (a 3 shot auto burst of AP shells will kill a power suit) but unless you equip your assault guys with it you won't need any AP shells. 4) HC fires fewer shots than AC on a turn (due to lack of auto fire) but you will be able to direct better your fire. Also, 3 direct hits will kill a power suit.

----

Grenades and Explosives
----

Stun Weapons
----

Hand to Hand (HTH) Weapons
These weapons are generally low on damage and are restricted to your soldier being adjacent to their target. There are several advantages to using them when you find yourself close to a target, however.

* Speed: Unlike most ranged weapons, HTH weapons have a very low TU requirement to activate, sometimes as low as 10% TU cost. This makes these weapons extremely time efficient when you would be using TU's to dispatch a nearby target anyway.
* Stealth: Unlike ranged weapon fire, no explosion or projectile burst will be seen or heard by the enemy when you preform a HTH attack.
* Ammo: Unlimited
* Accuracy: 100%

Note that the speed and stealth of HTH weapons makes them excellent for cutting through walls and other obstacles on the battlescape while not alerting the enemy of your position.

Note also that HTH weapons generally have very low point cost and weight.
These weapons are generally low on damage and are restricted to your soldier being adjacent to their target. They have two main strengths that set them apart from every other weapon type.
This makes these weapons extremely time efficient when you would be using TU's to dispatch a nearby target anyway, as well as conserving ammo.
All unit actions, as in X-COM, are controlled with the mouse. UFO2000 uses
the same controls as the original games with only minor differences:
* right mouse click can be used to stop movement of a soldier
* soldiers can't automatically open doors, so you need to use right mouse click behind the door to open it (just like in TFTD)
* mouse wheel scrolls map levels up and down just like the ladder buttons on the control panel or the PgUp/PgDn keys
2 5 8 11
1 4 7 10
The order reflects the vertical disposition of the unit/object inside the target box: 1 corresponds to the lowest level of the square you're firing at, usually it is occupied with the floor, going upwards until 12, which is the highest level.

Quick guide to UFO2000 online playing
Still work in progress!

Written for the 1082 beta version, which is the most played version online. If you have 1062, please upgrade!

This guide is intended for people new to the game. Often people join the server first time they start the game and try to play with someone, but they don't have even a basic team ready and generally don't know what to do. Here are the necessary things to do and to learn before you play online.

Before you play
Install the original game data
UFO2000 has only one map by default -- Moon Base, which not very good. You should download the original game data here: http://data.the.cz/ufo_xcom.zip. The .zip file contains two directories (XCOM and TFTD), these should be unpacked wherever UFO2000 is installed. This it will enable you to play the most played maps like City and Port.

You can get even more maps from here: http://area51.xcomufo.com/depot2.htm. This mappack contains some very good maps, even though they're not played very often online.
First (hotseat) game
You should try a game against yourself to get the hang of the interface, and to make a team for online play. Start UFO2000 and choose "start hotseat game".
Setup
You'll see a list of units on the left, and controls to change the game options. Try to change the map to City by clicking the second row (the map name) in the "MATCH SETTINGS" box (if City doesn't appear in the list, you probably didn't follow the "Install the original game data" step correctly). You can place your units somewhere in the green rectangle on the left of the minimap.

The game options can be changed by either player online.
Make a first team
Equipment and weapon set
You can change the equipment and race or armour of each unit. To do this, CTRL+click the unit name in the list. There are some hotkeys available with useful functions in the unit detail, read about them in the legend on the right. First thing to do is change the weapon set -- nobody plays the default "Galactic" set online. Change it to "Ufo2k Classic Set" by pressing Page Down / Page Up in the unit detail. Your units will still have equipment from the Galactic set, which will be highlighted in red. Dump them by right-clicking each and use weapons from the Ufo2k Classic Set instead.

Each piece of equipment and each unit costs points. In an online game, the players decide on a point limit, most often 7000 or 15000 points. You should probably make a team for both. Don't go mad with power armour and expensive weapons, because that way you'll have to take less units. In a 7k (7000 points max) game, it is desirable to have six units, or at least five. In 15k game, take at least twelve units.
:This really depends on the terrain and your choice of tactics. For instance, most players deploy their units on a line and maintain that line during the first rounds. But if you have a smaller team and you're attacking through a specific axis you'll be facing the same amount of troops than your opponent and they'll be better armed and protected. Hobbes 19:44, 24 November 2008 (CST)

By clicking the units statistics in the unit detail, you can change its race, name and some of the stats. More powerful races cost more points (see Unit Types (UFO2000)). Stats have a cost too, and they also have a limit on the total -- they're a bit complicated (you may read about them in Unit Stats (UFO2000)). You can tinker with them later and keep them as they are for now.

A team usually needs some cheap scouts (which can use cheap weapons like laser pistols, and should have 80 time units), assault units (mutons are good, usually with a plasma rifle) and perhaps some support with heavy weapons like XAAS or rocket launcher. Alien fusion grenades (the most powerful kind (there's also the demolition pack, but it behaves a little differently from grenades -- explained below) and smoke grenades are also useful things to take.

When you have a team, you can save it with F2 in the unit detail screen, and load it later with F3.

Start the game
When you're done equipping and placing your units on the map, press SEND and then START on the left of the map screen. Place some units for the second team and SEND + START on the right to start the game.
Ingame
You're in the battlescape now. The interface should be familiar from the old XCOM games. By default, the doublescale mode is enabled -- press asterisk (*) on the number pad to disable it and get better resolution.

You can check how far you can get with your time units by holding CTRL and moving the mouse around. By holding ALT, you can check the trajectory of your shot to see if there's anything in the way between you and your target, or check the trajectory of a thrown grenade (very useful!).

You can change the size of the chat window on the bottom by pressing SHIFT + Up or Down arrows.
Review
So by now you should:
* have the original game data installed and maps like 'City' choosable
* be familiar with the game interface
* have a reasonable team for 7k / 15k point games

This is pretty much it -- now you can play online. There are more good things to know though, and I'll talk about them in the next paragraphs.

Beyond the first game
Game mechanics
Explosives
Just like in the old XCOM games, you can prime a grenade to 0 and hold on to it for a couple more turns, it won't explode until you throw or drop it (but it will explode as soon as it hits the ground when thrown, so you can't use the "grenade proxy" technique).

However, this isn't the case for the powerful demolition pack, it will explode precisely on time and you need to be very careful with it. If you prime one to 0, you need to throw it on the same turn, or it will explode in your hands. If you want to throw on your next turn, prime to 2 (before you get your turn, 2 grenade time units will pass). Practice in hotseat a little before you use demolition packs, it's a bummer to blow up your own guys in a real game.

Getting better
Replays
Don't forget to save a replay after a game -- in the replay you can see the whole battlefield and most importantly your opponent's turns. This way you can learn a lot about other people's teams and strategy to improve yours.
Making a decent team
* Races
* Stats
Issues
Can't choose a race
Sometimes it happened to me that i can't change a unit's race to an alien in the unit detail -- it will turn to human with no armour no matter what i choose. A workaround is to copy an existing alien unit (ctrl+insert) and paste (shift+insert) it to the unit you want to change. After that, it should be possible to change the race to whatever you want.

(is this because you can only change your race to an alien when the unit is male and not female?)
Minimap dissapeared in battlescape
Usually happens when playing with different map sizes. Press shift+right arrow, then shift+left arrow, it should appear again.
Unit can't move
This is usually because you're out of energy (the orange bar in the stats) because you were moving too much in the past few turns. Unfortunately, the game doesn't show any special message or other indication when you try to move without energy, so it may seem like a bug occurred.

Use of Stats
Unit statistics define the skills of units and can be set individually by a player within certain limits. Currently all stats for the units fall between 50 and 80 with the exception of strength which falls between 25 and 40.
Unit statistics are also used to determine the total point cost of each unit, and there are differences in their costs, which are summarized below:

colspan = "7" | UFO2000 Statistics
Stat || Unit Cost || Point Cost || Minimum || Maximum
stdTable Sub Heading| Time Units || 1 || 1 || 50 || 80
stdTable Sub Heading| Stamina || 0.5 || 1 || 50 || 80
stdTable Sub Heading| Health  || 1 || 1 || 50 || 80
stdTable Sub Heading| Reactions || 2 || 1 || 50 || 80
stdTable Sub Heading| Firing Acc. || 0.5 || 1 || 50 || 80
stdTable Sub Heading| Throwing Acc. || 0.5 ||  1 ||50 || 80
stdTable Sub Heading| Strength || 2 ||  2 || 25 || 40
stdTable Sub Heading| Armor || 2 || *  || * || *  ||
stdTable Sub Heading| Flying** || 150 || NA || NA || NA ||
* Variable depending on the race/armor. Can't be modified.
** Flying ability only applies to Fly Suit, Ethereal and Floater.

Unit Cost - indicates how much the stat adds towards the total cost value of the unit. If a unit has 50 reactions, then it adds 100 towards its final cost.

Point Cost - indicates how many of the extra points it is necessary to increase that stat by 1.

Extra points - each unit can use up to 140 extra points, which can be set by the players to customize the units. If all points are used up then it will be necessary to decrease first one stat before increasing another.

Base Values - The minimum values set to all units, regardless of their race, add to a total of 350 points. Armor and Flying Ability do not count for this total since your choice for those is limited by the available game races.

Armor and flying are included on the list only to indicate their cost. In the case of Armor the cost is multiplied by the sum of all armor (front, sides, back and under).

Types of stats
Time Units
determine how many actions a unit can preform in one turn. Different actions have different time unit costs. It is always recommended that you give your units as many time units as possible so that they can move more often. It doesn't affect how many times they can fire since that is determined by a percentage over the total TUs of the unit.

Stamina
is the physical endurance of the unit. As the unit moves, its stamina goes down. A unit will not be able to move if its stamina is decreased too far.

Health
determines how much damage a unit can take before dying. This statistic is important for all units, but it should be very high for squad leaders in games such as assassination and escape.

Bravery
is automatically set to 100% under current game settings. It is reduced by enemy fire, and increased by death of a foe nearby. When it sinks too low, there is a chance that the unit will panic.

Reactions
determines the unit's ability to fire during the opponent's turn if an enemy is visible. This is very useful for scouts.

Firing
determines the unit's accuracy with firearms.

Throwing
determines the unit's accuracy when throwing.

Strength
represents the amount of weight which the unit can carry. A high strength is often necessary for units equipped with heavy weapons. The strength statistic costs double points.

Tactical Mouse Controls
All unit actions, as in X-COM, are controlled with the mouse. UFO2000 uses
the same controls as the original games with only minor differences:
* right mouse click can be used to stop movement of a soldier
* soldiers can't automatically open doors, so you need to use right mouse click behind the door to open it (just like in TFTD)
* mouse wheel scrolls map levels up and down just like the ladder buttons on the control panel or the PgUp/PgDn keys

Tactical Keyboard Controls
Right CTRL + b,d,e,p,r
Switch between Belarusian, German, English, Polish and Russian keymaps (other languages can be selected in ufo2000.ini file).
Left CTRL
Shows the route of the selected soldier to the cursor cell with number of TUs left at each cell of the path. In the inventory screen, it will show item damage value as a damage bar.
Left ALT
Shows the trajectory of your shots assuming the accuracy of the shot is ideal. When THROW for an object in hand is selected, it alternatively shows the trajectory of an ideal throw. In the inventory screen, it will show item damage value in digits.
Left SHIFT
Allows precise aiming if held down while ordering a soldier to shoot with the left mouse button. See below.
F12
Save the screen to "snapshot_n.pcx" file where n is the number of the snapshot.
SHIFT + Spacebar
Pause game.

Left SHIFT details:
Shows a box with squares for precise aiming as shown.
3 6 9 12
2 5 8 11
1 4 7 10
The order reflects the vertical disposition of the unit/object inside the target box: 1 corresponds to the lowest level of the square you're firing at, usually it is occupied with the floor, going upwards until 12, which is the highest level.

Welcome to the UFO2000 Wiki, a part of UFOpaedia.org. UFO2000 is a free and opensource turn based tactical squad simulation game with multiplayer support. While it has its own engine written from scratch, the game still relies on the data files from the X-COM: UFO Defense game.

The UFO2000 Wiki is meant to be a guide to the game, providing new players with a quick explanation of the game while introducing more complex tactics to advanced players. It will also contain information regarding how to costumize the game to add your own units, terrains and weapons, plus provide more technical details on the different aspects of the game.

This Wiki is a work in progress - all contributions to it are welcome as long as they are related with UFO2000. Feel free to add new pages, edit the current ones and to use the discussion tab to ask any question.

For more information regarding UFO2000 please visit our site. Happy gaming!

* Front-  12

* Front- 100

Sectoid
Base cost (with minimum stats) : 353

Sectoids are your standard little green man type alien. They have extremely low armor values, but it is matched by an equally low cost. Sectoids won't stand up in a firefight, but they do serve as good scouts.

Armour levels
* Front-   4
* Left-    3
* Right-   3
* Rear-    2
* Under-   2

* Front-  70
* Left-   60
* Right-  60
* Rear-   50
* Under-  50

* Front-  40
* Left-   30
* Under-  20
Ethereal
Base cost (with minimum stats) : 955

Ethereals are strange cloaked aliens who have slightly better than standard armor and the ability to fly. This gives them a strong amount of versatility when it comes to the roles they can play.

Armour levels
* Front-  60

Floater
Base cost (with minimum stats) : 615

Floaters are the cheapest flying unit in the game. Unfortunately this means that their armor isn't going to help them much more than humans with no armor. They make excellent scouts due to their mobility, and because explosions do not travel up they are excellent for hovering over the enemy and blowing them up.

Armour levels
* Front-  20
